Poppy seed is an oilseed obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). The tiny, kidney-shaped seeds have been harvested from dried seed pods by various civilizations for thousands of years. It is still widely used in many countries, especially in Central Europe and South Asia, where it is legally grown and sold in shops. The seeds are used whole or ground into meal as an ingredient in many foods – especially in pastry and bread – and they are pressed to yield poppy seed oil.
Poppy seeds are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are also high in phytosterols, which have been shown to help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels.

Poppy seeds are rich with oil, protein and dietary fiber. They are the richest in calcium among all nuts and seeds. They also contain considerable amounts of iron and a very fair amount of vitamins E and K. The mineral content is decent, except for sodium which is surprisingly high.

Poppy Seeds are used in cooking and baking or as a garnish. It gives a nutty flavor and crunchy texture to cooked and baked items such as bread, cakes, muffins, bagels, and pasta dishes.
